When a family member called him needing a lift a 51-year-old man foolishly drove even though he had been drinking.

Pedro Malaquiad Da Fonseca, Obins Street, Portadown, was fined £250 last Wednesday at Craigavon Court for driving with excess alcohol on March 8.

He was also banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard that at 11.45pm police saw a car being driven erratically in the town centre.

They stopped it in Bridge Street and spoke to the the driver. There was a strong smell of alcohol.

He failed the roadside test and an evidential breath test gave a reading of 69.

Mr Conor Downey, representing the defendant, said his client had been at home enjoying drinks with his family.

He received a call from another family member who needed a lift and foolishly took the car, added Mr Downey.
