Man grabbed police officer by testicles

After exposing himself to police a 29-year-old man struggled with officers and grabbed one of them by the testicles, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Friday.

Jonathan Giffin, Marlacoo Road, Portadown, admitted a number of offences arising out of an incident at West Street in the town on November 2 last year.

For the assault on the officer by grabbing him by the testicles he was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for two years.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, ordered Giffin to pay £200 compensation to the officer due to the nature of the assault.

For two other assaults on police and resisting police he was given concurrent three-month terms, also suspended for two years.

A one-month sentence, suspended for two years, was imposed for unlawful damage to a police vehicle.

Giffin was fined £100 for intentionally exposing his genitals and £100 for indecent behaviour.

The court heard the defendant was seen urinating in a doorway and then he dropped his trousers and exposed himself to officers.

There was a struggle and after spitting at an officer he grabbed a policeman by the testicles.

Judge Bates said the exposure offence was not for sexual gratification but more of a public order nature but there were serious aspects to the case as regards the assaults.

Mr Gabriel Ingram, representing the defendant, said there were difficulties between Giffin and his partner at the time. He had gone out and drowned his sorrows.

He added that what happened had badly shaken up the defendant who had shown genuine remorse. His behaviour was absolutely ridiculous.

Judge Bates said the assaults on police were worse than the exposure matter in this case.

He added that spitting was an aggravating feature as was the nature of the grabbing in one of the offences.
