Man kicked
police officer

A Portadown man who kicked a police officer was given 100 hours of community service last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

Twenty-seven-year-old Joseph Martin Hamill, Annaghmore Road, Portadown, admitted assaulting a constable and obstructing a constable on February 16 this year.

The court heard that at 1.20am in Woodhouse Street there were people fighting in the area. Police were dealing with a person when Hamill kicked an officer.

He was shouting and being obstructive. When cautioned he apologised for his behaviour.

A solicitor for Hamill said he apologised to the officer at the scene.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said the nature of the assault meant it passed the custody threshold.

He imposed concurrent terms of 100 hours on each of the two offences.
