After he was arrested and placed in a police vehicle a 23-year-old man became aggressive and spat at an officer.

Kyle Kane, The Olde Golf Links, Portadown, admitted assaulting an officer last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

The court heard that on May 6 the defendant was arrested for an unrelated offence, handcuffed and placed in a police vehicle at 2.20am.

He was extremely aggressive and managed to free his left hand from the handcuffs. He went towards the driver who had to stop the vehicle.

Kane was asked to put his hands behind him so that the handcuffs could be re-applied but he refused.

The handcuffs were put on again and Kane spat at an officer. It landed on his leg.

He was arrested for assault and throughout the journey he continued to be aggressive and made noises as if he was gathering phlegm in his throat to spit at police.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said Kane had previously been fined for a similar offence.

He adjourned the case until July 8 so that a pre-sentence report could be prepared.
