A tracking device on a mobile phone led police to the person who stole the phone, Craigavon Magistrates Court was told last Friday.

Twenty eight year old Stefan Szobo, Carrickdale Gardens, Portadown, was fined £250, with a £15 offender’s levy, for the theft of an Iphone, valued at £200, on July 12 this year.

The court heard that on July 12 the injured party attended Banbridge police station saying her phone had been stolen from her jacket in Asda. She had hung it up while working in the clothing section.

Using a tracking application police went to an address where they found the defendant who admitted taking the phone. He said a friend had tried on the jacket thinking it was for sale and found the phone in a pocket.

It was returned to its owner and was in good working order.

A solicitor for Szobo said it was an opportunistic offence when he was shopping.
