Murals brighten up closed shutters

The mural.
The mural.

Often we shudder at the dull sight of pulled-down shutters in Portadown – but not at the town’s Millennium Court Market Hall.

For the erstwhile grey shutters that are closed on non-market days are now an attractive and colourful montage of fruit and vegetable (see picture) before they are rolled for the popular Friday and Saturday markets at William Street.

The project has been funded by Craigavon Borough Council’s comprehensive Shop Front Painting Scheme 2014, the aim of which is to make improvements to the shopping infrastructure of the entire borough.

Artwork on the shutters was designed and carried out by Blaze FX of Belfast, which specialises in aerosol art, the company having worked with The Millennium Court Arts Centre on many community art projects over the years.

Blaze FX’s speciality is in bring to life mundane and neglected spaces, and the depiction of market produce at the market hall has certainly created a colourful scenario at William Street.

A spokesperson said, “The reaction of the public has been pleasingly positive with many calling at the Millennium Court reception to comment on the work.”
