A local nature reserve has netted £35k in funding for bio-diversity projects.
Portmore Lough Nature Reserve is one of a small number of groups which are reaping the benefits of the £3m Landfill Tax Credit Initiative.
The Alpha Programme was launched in 2008 by Alpha Resource Management Ltd, a dedicated waste management and green energy company based at Mullaghglass, a Lagan Group Company.
The Programme was created to provide a means to allocate funding through the Landfill Tax Credits Scheme to local communities projects and environmental regeneration schemes. The funding is made up of a combination of Landfill Tax and direct contributions from Alpha Resource Management Ltd. To date, 101 groups have been successfully awarded funds to cultivate a range of projects that involve grassroots community work or environmental regeneration.
Portmore Lough Nature Reserve part of the RSBP will use £35,000 to deliver biodiversity improvements on wet, marshy areas of the reserve which are currently inaccessible. It will also encourage species such as Irish hare and Irish lady’s-tresses orchid to grow.
Junior Minister Jennifer McCann said; “This innovative programme is very encouraging not only strengthening our local communities but also setting an industry standard. Other companies within the waste management sector should take note.”
