No incident at event

A republican commemoration in Portadown on Tuesday night, criticised by Upper Bann MP David Simpson, passed off peacefully.

The graveside commemoration took place in St John’s Cemetery and was to the memory of local republican Julie Dougan who died in July 1972 as the result of a road accident.

Mr Simpson was annoyed that leaflets were circulated around the town, “featuring three masked terrorists in a pose as though they are firing a volley of shots”.

In a statement, he said, “I don’t want to see a repeat of what happened in Castlederg where, although the law was broken, the police had insufficient evidence to bring forward prosecutions.”

However, a supporter who attended the commemoration said that no law was broken, adding, “There was no march to the event and it took part in a nationalist area of the town. It consisted of readings, an address and prayers.”

A PSNI spokesman said they were aware of an event in the Garvaghy Road area on Tuesday night “and it passed off without incident”.
