Peacocks to move into High Street in next fortnight

The Peacocks fashion chain are preparing to open in the former Woolworth’s store at Portadown’s High Street Mall.

Work is already under way ahead of the opening which is expected in the next few weeks.

Peacocks formerly traded from Magowan Buildings – where NV and Gino’s also closed recently – before they went into administration in February 2012.

After Woolworths went bust in 2008, the unit was rented by the multinationals Au Naturale and Ethel Austin.

But they, too, went under and Portadown Cares took over last year, although the store was too big for them. When the Clinton Cards store closed, they moved next door into its premises which are ideal.

The Portadown Times reported in March that Peacock’s were returning to Portadown, and now that preparatory work has started.

It will be quite a boost to the High Street Mall and to Portadown in general. Another Times story that SD Kells is coming to town has now been confirmed - the venue is the former Poundstretcher premises in Market Street, and both developments are sure to increase the diminishing footfall in town, where the costume jeweller firm Argento has recently set up shop, also in West Street.

However, there are still gaping holes in the Mall, and the management is working hard to have these occupied.
