Vickers became a national hero in Canada in October 2014 after he shot dead Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, the gunman who had killed a soldier on patrol at Parliament Hill in Ottawa. After Zehaf-Bibeau burst into the parliament building, he was shot and killed by Vickers who at the time was the sergeant-at-arms in the parliament.

Mr Murphy said he is not a member of any political party but is involved with the Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association, which offers support to republican prisoners in Portlaoise and Maghaberry prisons.

He said he has not met McConville and Wootton but claims there were serious questions about the forensics involved in the PSNI murder case and about the evidence of the main prosecution witness.

He has been charged with a public order offence under Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994 and is to appear before the District Court in Blanchardstown on June 21st.
