Action Cancer is calling on people to sign up for the New York City marathon, and help raise vital funds for the charity.

Latest cancer statistics have revealed that there were on average 8,928 cases of cancer diagnosed in Northern Ireland in a single year, and of that figure 904 were in Co Armagh.

The marathon will take place on Sunday, November 1, and the organisers stress that both runners and walkers are welcome.

“You don’t need to be a super-fit athlete to enter; all you need is the determination and the desire to make a difference,” said fundraising events officer Sarah-Jayne Cassells.

She added, “The atmosphere when you get to the city is electric. The race day itself is spectacular – a carnival atmosphere takes over the city with two million spectators lining the streets and bands playing on every corner.”

All money raised from the marathon stays in Northern Ireland and goes towards the charity’s services including breast screening, big bus mobile unit, complementary therapy and counselling support services as well as health promotion. To sign up, contact Sarah-Jayne on 028 9080 3379, Stacey Graham on 028 9080 3349 or email run@actioncancer.org.
