An investigation has been launched into the cause of a house fire in Lurgan overnight in which two residents narrowly averted a tragedy.

Fire crews from Portadown and Lurgan were called to a property in Trasna Way after a blaze took hold at the front door of the home.

Arriving shortly after 1am, two firefighters with breathing apparatus entered the house but the two occupants had already escaped the fire.

According to the fire service, the blaze is being treated as suspicious.

DUP MLA Carla Lockhart said that the police have launched forensic investigations at the scene.

“This is a very worrying turn of events”, she said. “Today we could have been dealing with the death of a family ... just an horrific thought!”

She urged anyone with any information to contact the PSNI on 101.
