TOMORROW (Saturday) is Portadown Boat Club's annual regatta on the River Bann.
Firmus energy are supporting the event and club captain, Kevin McDonagh, said, “We were delighted when they agreed to sponsor the regatta.

“It’s one of the highlights of the sporting calendar in the Craigavon area and it continues to grow year on year. More than 60 crews have entered for a variety of events so Saturday is going to be another very busy day.”

Speaking in mid-week he said, “Although the draw still has to be made we anticipate somewhere between 120 and 130 races, all of which will be over the distance of 1,500 metres - just under a mile.

“So let’s just put it in context by saying that Portadown regatta will be one of the biggest rowing events in Ireland this year.”

Racing starts at 8am and will last for 10 hours, running until 6pm.

FAMILY DAY

“The regatta is a great day out for all the family, so we’d encourage people to come along to watch, even if it’s only for a few races,” Kevin said. “There is always a real festival atmosphere, so our invitation to the people of the town is come along, enjoy it and be part of it.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to once again showcase the Bann and all the amenities it affords. In addition to the wonderful river, the tow path alongside it is part of the Ulster Way which continues right along to Newry.

“Of course, we have been working with Craigavon Borough Council, who have been a tremendous support, on a proposal to develop an international watersports lake to provide sports facilities for rowing, triathlon and canoeing.

OLYMPICS

“If that comes to fruition, it will mean Portadown becoming pivotal in the Irish attempt for success in the 2012 Olympics and thereafter offering a world-class facility for everybody in the country to enjoy.”

Explaining firmus energy’s decision to back the event, sales and marketing manager Neil Holland said, “Portadown Boat Club is one of the oldest in Ireland having been founded 128 years ago. They have a fantastic reputation for the quality of their regatta, which has junior and senior sections and attracts crews from all over Ireland.

“It continues to go from strength to strength - more than 3,000 people watched it last year. It’s a great day out, with food available in the pavilion and a lunchtime jazz session adding to the party mood.”
