NIALL Currie capped a record-breaking campaign as Loughgall manager by picking up the Carnegie First Division title on Saturday afternoon at Lakeview Park.
A five-strong haul of honours marked a season that will live long in the memory of those connected to the villagers - not a bad way to wrap up a first full programme in the Loughgall hot seat for Currie!
At the age of 34 years old, the thoughts o
f most goalkeepers would probably still be on life between the posts. For Currie - a popular figure in Irish League circles following spells with clubs such as Bangor and Armagh City - his focus last summer covered a far greater scale than a mere penalty area.
Currie, of course, had previously opted to hang up his gloves in the aftermath of an appointment as Annagh United manager and it was progress with the Tandragee Road-based outfit that helped position the fledgling boss for a shot at the vacant Loughgall post in 2007.
RETURN
His return to the club he served as a player was met with no small degree of reservation within the game but a Lakeview Park trophy cabinet now at full capacity should certainly serve as the perfect response to those who doubted his appointment.
However, Currie may now have a gleaming medal collection to help enhance his reputation but the manager admits it is only the first step along what is intended to be a long road.
“It was a wonderful opportunity to get the job of Loughgall manager at just 34 years old,” said Currie.
