High stakes over summer

PORTADOWN manager, Ronnie McFall, is facing a key summer on two fronts in preparation for the debut Premier Intermediate League.
McFall can enter the close-season period boosted by having the majority of his current squad under contract.
However, the issue of any unrest between the players must be addressed as soon as possible following Portadown's loss of senior status.
Leading top-flight clubs are viewing events with interest, ready to try and benefit from any disruption to morale.
It is understood that Portadown have plans in place to minimise any financial damage and only contracted players deemed surplus to requirements will be allowed to exit.
However, fans remain concerned over the damage to confidence and potential risks of a negative reaction by players to the club's error.
As well as preparing existing players for the forthcoming challenge of intermediate football, McFall is also expected to strengthen his panel.
Portadown's fall will obviously prove a stumbling block to attracting fresh faces but sources indicate that scouting has already started.
Players connected to last season's reserves and thirds have agreed deals.
The summer of 2008 was always going to prove important following last season's failure to challenge for silverware - events this week have just raised the stakes...
