BALLYHEGAN'S minor ladies footballers emerged victorious from their McGleenan Park clash with Keady Dwyers.
The visitors won a high-scoring match by a 3-12 to 3-5 margin.
On what was a very calm but damp night, the Davitts girls found themselves 2-2 to 0-2 down after 20 minutes. At that they sprang to life, rallying to score 1-3 before this hard work wa
s undone when Keady bagged a fortuitous goal.
The guests pegged a few more scores just before the break to leave the interval score 3-3 to 1-7 in favour of Keady who then put two further points on the board before Ballyhegan upped it a gear.
The pressure on the Keady goal was almost relentless and Ballyhegan were rewarded with a penalty. Alas, it went it inches wide of the left post.
But while others might have lost heart, the Davitts stuck to the task, picking off their scores to reduce the deficit.
With 10 minutes left thy drew level, before going on to finish the game with a seven-point lead.
*The senior girls won, too, beating Silverbridge2-8 to 2-5 on Saturday night, thereby extending their winning run.
Played in ideal conditions, the match against the newly-promoted ’Bridge girls was keenly contested.
Ballyhegan began the brighter and good movement in the forward line led to scores from Laura McKeever and Danielle Morgan, Silverbridge responding with a point, to which Brenda McCormack relied in kind.
Silverbridge hunted in packs for any loose ball and having shown the greater hunger in the first half they levelled matters with two scores. A further point from Danielle Morgan served only to spur them on and they finished the half much the stronger, scoring 1-2 to open up what proved to be the biggest lead of the game.
Credit to Ballyhegan, though. Rather than buckling under the pressure they steadied things with another two points to end the half a great individual strike from Lisa Knox and a Laura McKeever effort.
Stern words at half time had the desired effect and Ballyhegan came out a more determined outfit. An early goal from perennial poacher, Kirsty Thompson, settled nerves and when Danielle Morgan scored another they were up to fifth gear. They out-muscled and out-worked their young Silverbridge opponents, a number of whom tired visibly.
Laura McKeever slotted over a free and although Silverbridge replied with a goal, that was their only score of the half. Laura Forker’s free kick at the end gave Ballyhegan a 3-point victory margin.
In defence, Allanah Hughes produced another immense display, with Sarah Morgan and Catherine McCormack working very hard in the second half particularly. The midfield covered a lot of ground and although sometimes wasteful in possession, the forwards managed to take some nice scores.
