PORTADOWN'S eagerly-anticipated home Carling Premiership date with Cliftonville has led to an early-season fixture headache.
Cliftonville's progress in the Europa League to the third qualifying round has led to the postponement of the original curtain-raiser on Saturday, August 7.

Attempts to find a rescheduled midweek date have been wrapped up in red tape and fixture
congestion to the extent that Ports fans may have to wait until September before playing host to Cliftonville.

If Tuesday, September 7 is confirmed as the fresh date it will restrict Portadown to revenue from just one home gate against Ballymena United during August.

UEFA rules for the forthcoming season request that individual associations respect European club competitions and clear domestic schedules for events such as Champions' League nights.

"With Cliftonville scheduled to face CSKA Sofia on August 5 we were happy to postpone the August 7 match," said Portadown club secretary, Bill Emerson. "Portadown's progress in the Europa League has created a wonderful sense of optimism around the town and the overall feelgood factor created by Carling Premiership clubs' summer success must be supported and encouraged.

"Switching to Solitude is not an option due to Cliftonville's ground redevelopments.

"August 10 has been ruled out as a result of the commitments that week with Northern Ireland under 23s.

"Plus, we now play our opening fixture on Friday, August 13 away to Glenavon.

"August 17 and 24 are Champions' League nights and on the final Tuesday we travel to Donegal Celtic."
