PORTADOWN men's firsts' unbeaten league run ended on Saturday with a 6-1 defeat by Antrim.
The opening 10 minutes featured chances for both teams.
Portadown’s main attacking threat came in the form of David Quaile and the industrious running of the midfield duo of Chris Gregg and Graeme Morrison.
Gareth Titler had the best opportu
nity for Portadown but could not find the finish after making his way into the circle.
Portadown proved the architects of their own downfall and Antrim’s opening goal was gifted to them by some sloppy play. Knocking the ball around the back, Portadown’s midfielders were robbed of possession just outside the 25-yard line and, with a clear run on goal, the home forward made no mistake.
FASHION
Five minutes later, Portadown gifted Antrim the second goal of the day in almost identical fashion.
Into the second half, Portadown were finding life tough in the middle of the pitch against a physical and imposing Antrim side.
Antrim were 3-0 up early in the second half thanks to a break from the halfway line and another neat finish.
On 50 minutes, Portadown produced a quick break through the middle of the pitch and released Quaile. He worked his way through the home defence before flicking the ball neatly in at the right post.
With Antrim temporarily reduced to 10 men, Portadown started to gain the upper hand but could not find another way past the home goalkeeper.
TRADEMARK
Kenny White came close with a trademark short corner strike but sloppy play, once again, cost Portadown and the hosts made it 4-1.
Antrim continued to press forward and, with 10 minutes to go, made it 5-1 with a well-struck short corner. A goal moments before the final whistle completed the comfortable, albeit somewhat flattering, scoreline for the hosts.
