ANDY Smith is scheduled to kick off his eagerly-anticipated second spell in a Portadown jersey during next week's Carnegie Premier League visit to Institute.
The striker found the net on six occasions over 11 appearances during a previous period on the Shamrock Park books this season.
A red card against former club, Glentoran, brought his initial short-term contract to a premature end in December 2007 but the striker recently confirmed a deal which will stretch until 2010.
Smith, who will complete his suspension in relation to that Glentoran dismissal this weekend when the Ports play host to Donegal Celtic, is understandably eager to get back on the scoresheet.
KICK
"I am looking forward to the chance to kick a ball in a competitive match," said the former Northern Ireland forward. "Getting sent off against Glentoran is in the past now and my focus is on the future.
"It has been a frustrating period, although the time away from football allowed me the opportunity to sort out a few off-field aspects of my life.
"At the minute, I am living in London and training on a regular basis so my general fitness is good.
"I will probably arrive in Northern Ireland at the start of next week and it will be great to get out on the pitch with the lads.
"I am sure I will not have any trouble settling back in as, with the exception of Aime Koudou who I have not really seen play, I am familiar with everyone."
Smith's influence on proceedings during his first spell at the Ports appeared to increase with each passing fixture and the striker is keen to make up for lost time.
CLICK
"It was all just starting to click, in terms of my own game and the team overall," said Smith. "It is nice to have sorted out a long-term deal and the goal is to use the final run of games this season to prepare for the future.
"Ultimately, I am looking forward to a strong pre-season period as over the past few years I have always been injured so missed out.
"The aim once I return to the side this season is to just give it my best and, hopefully, make a successful contribution.
"Obviously, we want to get fourth place and it is important to end with as strong a finish as possible."
