PORTADOWN under 19s registered a 23-3 success over City of Derry on Saturday, gaining revenge as a result for defeat in the first meeting of the season between the sides.
Chris Cousens' converted penalty - awarded against City of Derry for coming
in the side at a ruck - set Portadown on the way to Ulster League success.
Lee Bicker proved in commanding form during the line-outs but City of Derry managed to level thanks to a penalty before another infringement by the visitors allowed Cousens to restore the three-point gap.
Portadown attacked over the early stages of the second half and a sweeping move resulted in centre Robbie Faloon registering a try which Cousens then converted.
Excellent rolling mauls left City of Derry on the backfoot - with Bicker and team captain, Gareth McNiece, at the heart of the action.
Cousens added another penalty before prop forward Ben Williamson capped a strong drive with a try.
Cousens' successful conversion wrapped up the scoring.
Portadown were scheduled to compete this week in the under 19s' Nutty Krust Floodlit Tournament at Chambers Park against Ballymena. Next week's match is between Banbridge and Dromore on Tuesday, March 9 at Chambers Park.
The tournament's opening fixture finished 29-3 in favour of Coleraine against Ballyclare.
