TONIGHT'S (Friday's) Harry Cavan Youth Challenge Cup final may mark the showpiece occasion in the under 18s' calendar but a quick look back over previous results should be enough to ease any pre-match nerves in the Portadown dressing room.
Mark Porter's players have managed to earn a shot at bringing the highly-coveted youth prize back to Shamrock Park for only the third time in the club's history by battling against many of the game's premier clubs.
Victory arrived against Glentora
n Colts at the end of a penalty shoot-out, with this triumph followed by a well-earned win away to Ballymena United ahead of a semi-final success at the expense of Linfield Rangers.
As a result, it should arrive as little surprise to those ready to step out on to Mourneview Park to take on Lisburn Distillery tonight if Porter's teamtalk draws heavily on past achievements en route to the Friday final under the Lurgan floodlights.
Porter reached the semi-finals of the tournament with Portadown as a player before proving a firm favourite across a number of Irish League clubs. As such, he is only too aware of how quickly a career can pass and the importance of grabbing every available opportunity for medals.
"I do not want to put the lads under too much pressure and I certainly prefer a relaxed atmosphere during training and in the dressing room." said Porter. "However, the reality is that, for some, it could prove the only chance to win a trophy.
"Age restrictions will prevent a few of the players from even taking part in the cup next year so there is certainly a lot up for grabs.
"The goal is to get the squad of 18 together about two hours before kick-off to help finalise the preparations.
"We want to make it as memorable as possible as they have been superb this season and deserve a shot at glory.
"Stefan Keegan will unfortunately miss the match due to outside commitments so the plan is to bring Ross Redman into the squad and his experience at senior level can only prove beneficial.
"Gary Topley and Jamie Rooney have been receiving treatment this week to help overcome some injury concerns.
"It will mark a first appearance at Mourneview Park for some of the lads, although quite a few have played on the pitch before with Portadown reserves.
"The playing surface should result in a good game and I am sure the players will receive excellent support from Portadown fans as it is a big night for the club as a whole.
"Although the chance to win the Harry Cavan Youth Challenge Cup is a major target, it is also important to emphasis how development is the key rather than simply looking at results.
"However, now we have this opportunity the excitement is building and the lads only have to look back over the campaign to gain a boost in confidence.
"Glentoran were considered by many as the pre-tournament favourites, a trip to Ballymena is never easy and getting a win over Linfield irrespective of the age level is always a great achievement."
Distillery will arrive in Lurgan aiming to build on last weekend's Carnegie Youth League triumph over Portadown - although Porter is refusing to place too much emphasis on that particular result.
"In fairness, both teams named extensive changes and, anyway, in a final it is all about what happens on the night," said Porter. "Distillery like to pass the ball about but can also be quite physical.
"They have scored 34 goals over the past four games and conceded just two so enter the final off the back of some impressive form.
"It is a wonderful opportunity for the players and also on a personal level, so now we must grab it with both hands.
COMMITMENT
"No matter what happens I cannot fault the players as they have displayed superb levels of commitment and enthusiasm over the season.
"The mood is extremely positive within the camp and now we just want to get down to business."
Previous triumphs arrived for Portadown over the 1979/80 and 1991/92 campaigns.
The 18-strong squad selected to travel to Lurgan tonight (Friday) is as follows: Andrew Wright, Chris Coleman, Neil McKee, Gary Topley, Jamie Rooney, Jordan Bell, Chris Jeffers, Mark Teggart, Aaron Haire, Jordan Baker, Ross Redman, Ryan Winter, Michael Wilson, Richard Nesbitt, Andrew Newell, Chris Elliott, Matthew Hollis and James Donnelly.
Kick-off at Mourneview Park tonight (Friday) will be 7.45.
