PORTADOWN’S commitment to youth development could yield trophy success tomorrow (Saturday) in Cookstown when the under 13s and under 15s line out in Ulster Bowl finals.
Thomas Gracey grabbed a try treble last weekend on home soil as Portadown under 13s defeated Omagh by 20-0 in the semi-finals.
The town prospects - with Simon Meredith as captain - will now take on Carrick to settle the outcome of the silverware.
Portadown moved the ball wide from the kick but Omagh held out despite promising breaks by Brett Flack and Matthew Neill.
Gracey opened the scoring on 15 minutes with a powerful try before Ross Gilmore’s pace helped him increase the lead.
Omagh hit back early in the second half but found Gracey, Meredith and Ben McKinnon in resolute mood.
McKinnon’s enthusiastic performance featured highlights in defence and attack, with Flack also impressive.
Omagh refused to lose heart and Portadown had to battle for every advantage - with Gracey’s second try of the morning making it 15-0.
Gracey then produced the final try of the match to set up a final with Carrick this weekend.
The under 15s will face Inishowen, with both games set to start at 11.40.
