PORTADOWN College marched into the semi-finals of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Bowl on Saturday thanks to a well-earned 16-0 win.

The clean sheet at Friends’ School provided Portadown with a reward for hard work across the pitch - with points arriving courtesy of Aaron Abraham’s try and strong kicking by Niall Davidson.

The College will now visit Rainey Endowed next weekend for a spot in the showpiece final. Grosvenor or Omagh Academy will compete to meet Foyle College in the other semi-final.

“We actually recorded a comfortable win over Friends’ School before Christmas but expected a much tougher test last weekend against a stronger side,” said Andrew Symington, head of boys’ PE at Portadown College. “Niall put away four penalties out of four and Aaron crossed the line for a good try.

“We had to be patient overall but the players deserve a lot of credit for playing with such composure and discipline.

“It was about waiting for the right moment and taking advantage when possible.

“Training has been going well and we can approach the Rainey match in confident mood.

“Our last meeting with Rainey was in the Vinny Doyle Memorial Cup and that ended in a defeat.

“Of course, we want to progress as far as possible in the competition so everyone is working hard in preparation for the semi-final.”
