’Vale captain keen to move on from weekend setback

DAVID Sinton admits Saturday’s defeat to Academy can be traced directly to poor fielding but is refusing to labour the point.

Laurelvale lost out having failed to pass a target set by an Academy side enjoying the benefits of some generous hands.

“To be honest, I was probably one of the main culprits and conditions may not have been ideal,” said Sinton, the Laurelvale captain. “However, that is no excuse but we cannot get caught up in those issues and instead should focus on the good points of the performance.

“Overall, the display had plenty on which to build and I am sure the fielding will improve as the season goes on.

“It is not as if the lads have not been putting in the practice.

“We had guys out on Monday night then, once Tuesday’s game was postponed against Portadown, quite a few stayed around the club for a few hours.

“It is difficult to develop any rhythm with the early part of the season so stop-start, however, the Academy game was not a league-defining result at this point.

“A few small things failed to go our way and overall we did not get the turn of luck with the bat.

“However, we need to look on it as a setback rather than anything too big and focus on the next fixture.

“Nine times out of 10 that performance last weekend would have resulted in a win.”

Laurelvale now face Drumaness tomorrow (Saturday) in the Junior Cup.

“We recently met each other in the league so know to expect a tough match,” said Sinton. “The league remains the main objective but obviously we still want to win this weekend.

“Hard work this week should help us prepare properly for the Drumaness match.”
