Lecky hits his magic number
RICHARD Lecky’s insistence that Saturday’s strike against Coleraine made it 50 for the striker has now been given the official green light by Portadown and the Irish Football Association.
Lecky (pictured) was on hand to break the deadlock last weekend in Portadown’s 2-0 defeat of Coleraine. It capped a successful festive period for Lecky following his finish on Boxing Day at home to Glenavon.
Post-match talk around Shamrock Park on Saturday centred on the numbers game as Lecky remained adamant he had hit the magic half-century tally - with Portadown’s official statistician placing the forward on 49.
However, the matter was cleared up over the weekend when Portadown’s Trevor Clydesdale contacted the IFA and both subsequently adjusted the records.
“I was in touch with Martin Harris from the IFA and he had Richard on two league goals this season on the official website, which tallied with my records,” said Clydesdale. “I reviewed the video of the disputed goal against Linfield but it was inconclusive.
“Martin had taken the scorer as (Garry) Breen but he went back and checked the referee’s report.
“The referee gives it to Richard so the IFA have amended their records and, officially, Saturday’s goal was Richard’s 50th.”
Lecky considers the official confirmation another bonus during his current positive period.
“It is nice to have it clarified by the IFA,” said Lecky. “I now have 11, 15, 17, 2 and 5 across each season to date with Portadown.
“At the minute, I am just happy to be back playing and in the side.
“It has been frustrating this season as I ended up out for a while with a broken nose just after getting a regular run.
“To be honest, it has only been the past few games I have felt completely over my previous ankle injury from last year.
“I could have no complaints as Darren Murray was scoring regularly then his suspension handed me an opportunity.
“Obviously now Gary Twigg is available but the mix of strikers can only be good for the club as any one of us can partner up with the rest.
“It is all about increasing the options for the manager.”
