McCabe walks out on Ports

SHANE McCabe’s decision to resume his inter-county GAA career has left the player in breach of contract with Portadown Football Club, writes Patrick Van Dort.
The midfielder signed for the Ports in the closing hours of the August 2010 transfer window on a long-term deal but has now walked out on the club at a crucial stage of the Carling Premiership season.
Portadown must now reshuffle the squad ahead of tomorrow’s (Tuesday’s) league trip to face Ballymena United.
“It is my understanding that Shane was involved in a Fermanagh GAA training camp over the weekend,” said Ports boss, Ronnie McFall. “I asked him to play against Ballymena United but he basically sent a text back saying ‘no’ and has confirmed he wants to return to the GAA.
“Therefore, he is in breach of contract and suspended without wages.
“He has the rest of this season and another full campaign under contract to this club and we retain his registration.
“I am personally disappointed and I know the staff, players and supporters will feel the same way.
“It is a major blow given our position with injuries and suspensions on top of what is already a small squad.”
Fermanagh will meet London on Sunday in the opening National Football League Division Four game.
