McCartney’s spot-kick success

ALAN WILSON CUP (ROUND ONE)
RICHHILL 2 LURGAN TOWN 2
(RICHHILL WON 3-1 ON PENS)

NEIL McCartney saved four penalty kicks on Saturday as Richhill marched on at the expense of Lurgan Town.

Chris McAlister’s headed pass provided Willie Anderson with a scoring opportunity which the veteran tucked away during the opening stages of the cup clash.

It was 2-0 soon after thanks to David Ross’ neat footwork from out wide before a pass allowing Johnny Allen to double the lead.

Richhill had chances to increase the gap but Lurgan Town received a lifeline with a penalty kick. However, Neil McCartney stepped up to save the spot-kick.

Lurgan Town forced extra-time with two goals over the closing stages of normal time - with a double injury blow adding to Richhill’s problems.

Ross tested the Lurgan Town goalkeeper ahead of a tight extra-time run.

McCartney pulled off three spot-kick stops in the shoot-out. Kyle Davison, Ross and David Nesbitt proved strong from the spot to help send Richhill into the next round.

RICHHILL: Neil McCartney, Sam Kelly, Kyle Davison, Jason Loney, Jeff Richardson, Johnny Allen, Chris Ross, Willie Anderson, Chris McAlister, David Ross, Richard Morrison. Subs: David Nesbitt, Milne Nellins, Keith Kelly.
