COLIN O’NEILL is returning to Mid-Ulster Football League management following confirmation this week of his appointment as Markethill Swifts boss.
O’Neill will join the Intermediate League outfit with Trevor McConnell as his assistant following Sam Bingham’s decision to step down at the end of the latest season.
O’Neill is a familiar name in football thanks to his playing days at Motherwell and Portadown. However, he can also boast plenty of managerial experience around Mid-Ulster circles.
“I plan on meeting up with the players this week and taking a look at everyone during the Armstrong Cup,” said O’Neill following his appointment on Monday night. “From what I know, they play decent football and it would be nice to bring a trophy to the club.
“I will be using my contacts, plus those of Trevor McConnell, to keep an eye on potential signings but I want to also stress that everyone already on the books gets a clean slate.
“From day one we will be starting fresh and giving each player the chance to stake a claim.
“We have put together some interesting pre-season plans and feel very positive about the situation following a really professional meeting with the Markethill Swifts officials.
“They run a good club and have an excellent 3G training pitch so there is plenty to build on.
“I have been watching a lot of football since my last official post, plus doing some scouting.
“However, you quickly get a taste for the week-to-week action and I am looking forward to getting down to business with the squad.”
SEAGOE officials would like to hear from anyone interested in the position of reserve-team manager.
