Strong second-half performance

PORTADOWN thirds managed to turn the tables on a two-goal half-time deficit to see off Institute Colts by 4-3 last weekend in IFA Youth League Section B.

A dramatic second-half display placed the young Ports in a commanding position despite the below-par performance ahead of the break.

“It was the worst display by a side in my time as third-team manager,” said Portadown’s Chris Wright. “We looked sluggish after a Christmas break dating back to the middle of December.

“However, Institute controlled the first half by beating us at our own game in terms of working hard and pressing at every opportunity.

“We got an early goal minutes into the second half and, overall, managed to set the tempo for a 4-3 win.

“Goals were scored by Shane McKinney, Regan McIlveen, Jamie Smith and John Gibson.

“In the end, it was down to application and work-rate, with levels hit that should provide a benchmark for the remainder of the season.

“The touch will return over games, along with match fitness, to sit alongside the effort from last weekend’s second half.”

PORTADOWN THIRDS: Taylor Craig, Jacob Taylor, Mark Whitten, Shane McKinney, John Gibson, Ryan Wilson, Ben Steen, Luke Adams, Ian McCracken, Regan McIlveen, Jamie Smith. Subs: Josh Norton, Jordan Campbell, Ryan Donaldson.

The thirds will meet Ballyclare Comrades Colts tomorrow (Saturday) at Kernan Playing Fields from 11 o’clock.
