Twigg on target in Ports away win

PORTADOWN produced the perfect response to last weekend’s Cliftonville defeat by grinding out a single-goal success on Friday night.

A determined second-half defensive display provided the clean sheet to see off Ballinamallard United - with Gary Twigg’s fourth goal in as many games the touch of class.

Twigg reacted superbly on 58 minutes to pounce on a loose ball inside the penalty area and angle a slick shot into the far corner of the net.

The first half failed to feature significant scoring opportunities but a positive performance from the visitors overall.

Ross Redman and Aaron Burns linked together on the left to place Ballinamallard on the backfoot.

However, both sets of players entered the interval on level terms following a scoreless first half.

If the first offered hope of an away win, the second half served up the decisive moment thanks to Twigg.

The striker’s individual moment of magic offered the attacking highlight but hard work and heart combined to frustrate the hosts.

David Miskelky continued his impressive form with saves to deny Conor O’Grady, Jason McCartney and Ryan Campbell.

The Ports goalkeeper also stood strong to save from Chris Curran, with the latter having previously fired a low drive wide of the mark on the Ballinamallard counter-attack.

The final whistle confirmed three hard-earned points to reward Portadown for a strong away display.
