Twigg’s delight at debut goal

GARY Twigg had plenty to celebrate at the final whistle on Saturday – but the New Year signing was quick to acknowledge the importance of the team win rather than any individual plaudits.

Twigg’s pre-contract agreement to switch from Shamrock Rovers provided Portadown fans with cause for cheer leading up to the January transfer window.

After months of discussion over how the striker would adjust to life in the Danske Bank Premiership he made his mark in emphatic fashion by grabbing the only goal of the game against Donegal Celtic.

Twigg reacted quickly on 49 minutes to head home a Chris Casement cross and provide the game’s key moment for a dream debut.

“It’s important to get three points as we know how close we are to the top six and where we want to be,” said Twigg. “To get the goal on my debut is something nice as well but the most important thing is three points.

“I’ve thought back and cannot think of any more chances I had so, thankfully, when the chance came I put it away.

“As a striker you want to score as early as you can for your new club and mine came today.

“I couldn’t have asked for any more, it’s a great bunch of boys and things couldn’t have gone any better to top the start I’ve had at Portadown.

“There’s loads of quality in the team and, hopefully, when they do create the chances I’m there at the end.

“When you are sitting in the stand and not played a game but people are singing for you it is lovely.

“But I just need to do the business on the pitch and give them more to sing about.”
