CANOEING SIX canoeing enthusiasts from the region recently scooped up Paddle Power awards.

Craigavon Watersports Centre’s Matthew McNicholl provided expert tuition, with the lessons organised by Eamon Murphy (Southern Health and Social Care Trust community access officer).

Funding for group members – each of whom has a learning disability - was provided by Sport Northern Ireland’s Active Communities Programme.

“Paddle Power is an introduction to canoeing and the participants were very keen to learn about paddle strokes, water safety and racing competitively,” said McNicholl. “Belfast kayaker Hanna Craig became the first slalom competitor to represent Ireland at the Olympic Games in London.

“She has inspired a generation I feel and members of the group commented on how much they enjoyed trying something different during the course.”
