Mackenzie Bennett celebrated his first appearance of the season in Senior One hockey with the final goal as Portadown men’s firsts cruised past Portrush on a 6-0 margin.

The Edenvilla Park success provided a boost in Portadown’s bid for a top-two position in the league standings.

Johnny Brown wrapped up his weekend treble and other goals came from a Zach McClelland brace.

Early pressure failed to produce any reward until Brown steered home a short corner with a reverse-stick shot.

McClelland increased the advantage to 3-0 by half-time with a quickfire double.

His first arrived when McClelland cut inside and guided a shot beyond the goalkeeper and the final talking point of the half led to the young player’s second following a short corner.

Portrush pushed hard after the interval but Portadown proved a threat on the break and McClelland’s pace resulted in a pass for Brown to score.

A solo strike by Brown secured his hat-trick in style.

Another McClelland assist allowed Bennett to celebrate his landmark appearance with a spot on the scoresheet thanks to a composed close-range flick.

Thanks go to Peter McClelland, Gail McClelland and Arlene Stevenson, plus the other sponsors and volunteers.
