Fox set to team up with club pro after weekend success around ’Blacker

Stevie Fox, playing off his nine handicap, wrapped up a Carrickblacker round of 75 last weekend to win the Professional’s Prize and PGA Tankard qualifier.

His nett 66 tally secured a spot alongside Paul Stevenson, the Portadown club professional, at the Ballycastle-based regional finals in October.

Paul Hanna was second on 66, followed by Sammy Walker, Derek McCoy, Bryan Harvey and Nigel Semple.

Philip McKeag won the gross on 72.

In the Thursday Stableford, Gareth Robinson won the event on 41 points - followed home by Freddie Ward’s 38 and 37 from John Guy. The top gross score was posted by Terry Sandford on 76.

Week four of the Wednesday Sweep - sponsored by Clifford McCulla of Zurich - featured Paul Coulter home as overall winner on 32 points.

The section winners were: 0-10 - Derek McCoy, 31 points; 11-14 - Ronnie Hynds, 31 points; 15-18 - Robert Hughes, 29 points; 19-plus - Tom McFarland, 32 points.

Mark Taylor won the Monday Seniors on 36 points.

In the low section, Sammy Forbes put up 32 points and Harmon Nesbitt registered 33 for high section. Eddie Atkinson was the leading veterans’ player on 30 points.

Tomorrow (Saturday) will mark the Open for Cystic Fibrosis Trophy, sponsored by Charlie Mallon Butchers.

Carrickblacker will host the GUI Pierce Purcell Qualifying regional event on Sunday - with Billy Gillis leading the Portadown team.
