Gilliland grabs early advantage in race for Winter League joy at Carrickblacker

Nigel Gilliland’s players hold top spot following the opening week of this season’s Winter League.

The Richardson’s Meats-sponsored competition at Carrickblacker featured 279.5 points across 13 cards.

John Guy and Drew Cunningham put up 24.5 points apiece, with Stevie Wray next in line on 24.

John Mackin’s squad secured second on his debut as team captain - with Joel McCrory and Mark Hewitt each on 25.5 points followed by Andrew Fitzsimons on 24 towards the 272.5 total.

The remaining points standings were as follows: 3, Walker 271.5; 4, Cassidy 269.5; 5, Grant 267; 6, Poole 263; 7, Simpson 262.5; 8, Sloan 262; 9, Elliott 258.5; 10, Jones 255.5.

The team positions following week one are: 1, Gilliland 10 points; 2, Mackin 9; 3, Walker 8; 4, Cassidy 7; 5, Grant 6; 6, Poole 5; 7, Simpson 4; 8, Sloan 3; 9, Elliott 2; 10, Jones 1.

The weekly winners were: section one - Mark Hewitt 25.5 points, Joel McCrory 25.5, Eamon Monaghan 25, John Guy 24.5; section two - Dave Allen 26, Lex Girvan 26, Wilfred Reavie 24, Cliff Garland 24; section three - Drew Cunningham 24.5, Mervyn Adamson 23.5, David Brighton 23, John McIlroy 23; section four - Ciaran Preshur 23.5, Connie Wilson 22, Billy Patterson 21.5, Martin Boyd 21.

In the Monday Seniors, Ronnie Withers finished first on 33 points, followed by Don Black and Ronnie Weir on 32 apiece.

The second week of the ladies’ Winter League attracted impressive support, with Karen Shaw edging out Pat Jelly and Helen Spencer third.

TANDRAGEE

Gordon Little posted 48 points for first place around the Gary Sherman Memorial at Tandragee.

He scored 24 along each nine off his 18 handicap to claim success by three points.

Neill McCauley came home as runner-up on 45 off a 25 handicap - with Andrew Walsh edging a four-strong run of players chasing third.

Walsh put up 41 points overall but a crucial tally of 22 for the back leg.

Randolph Loney had 21 points across the return run, with Peter Duke on 20 and Greg Bannerman with 19.

The gross was won by Stuart Paul’s 72 and James Pedlow finished as the top senior with 41 points.

Paul Mallon, Tony Bell, Colin McMullen and Ryan Harpur put up 57.4 nett to collect the Fourball Scramble honour.

The Jack Cassells Memorial featured Neill Hazard first overall on 42 points - followed home across the countback system by William Brady then Ralph Buckley with 41.

In the ladies’ Winter League, Linda Weir’s Maids A Milking posted 94 points over the leading six holes.

Ruby Harvey and Karen Shaw were the team’s leading players on 18 points apiece.

Lady captain Dolores Hamill secured second with 88 points by The French Hens - led by Lorraine Grimley’s 19.

Helen Fleming’s The Ladies Dancing sit third on 87 points ahead of Lynn Moorhead and Golden Rings with 86.

Lorraine Grimley’s Swans A Swimming have 85 points for fifth.
