Irish trio seal bronze in Mexico

Annabel Wilson, Olivia Mehaffey and Leona Maguire who finished an historic third in the World Amateur Team Championships in Mexico to win bronze medals for Ireland.

In what can only be described as a tantalising finish for Ireland at the Espirto Santo Trophy, the team of Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell), Olivia Mehaffey (RCDL) and Annabel Wilson (Lurgan) produced a little magic on the final day to secure a bronze medal.

Maguire, Mehaffey and Wilson all produced their best rounds of the tournament on the final day as the world number one carded a final round of 69 (-3). Mehaffey went one better with a superb 68 with Wilson shooting an even par 72.

Ireland, Denmark and Thailand tussled for third spot throughout the final day but a strong finish from the young Irish team secured them a brilliant podium finish.

It was a fantastic achievement by the young team and Annabel, who continues to represent Lurgan G.C. so ably on the world stage.

Scarva girl Mehaffey, meanwhile, reflected on the history-making feat in Mexico, which she says illustrates the standard of Irish golf.

“This week has been amazing,” said Mehaffey. “It’s always good to make history and to perform so well as a team at such a high level shows how good Irish golf is right now.

“It’s great to win a bronze at world level against the best players from their countries and I think it will take a while to sink in.”

South Korea won the evenr with a stunning 29 under total with Switzerland second on eight under.

Mehaffey has recently begun a scholarship at one of Arizona State university.

“It has been a class month so far and I love it,” she said. “It’s been great to practice at world class facilities with a great team around me.”
