Lavery heading off to County Kildare for spot at summer regional meeting

Portadown’s Matthew Lavery is heading off to The K Club in June after securing a spot at the PGA Pro Am regional finals.

Playing off his 10 handicap, Lavery pitched in at the final hole for a round of 74 in the PGA Pro Am and Lombard Trophy qualifier.

He will now join Carrickblacker club professional Paul Stevenson in County Kildare this summer.

David Alexander and Brian Harvey both finished on nett 64, with Harry Proctor completing the top four.

Gareth Robinson and Robert Hughes each registered 66 nett, with Philip McKeag the leading gross player on 74.

The Thursday Stableford was won by Eric McAfee on 41 points thanks to the countback against Derek McCoy.

Dan McKimm, a juvenile, was next home and Brian Harvey topped the gross scoring.

Hugo Marley was winner of the Stephen Anderson Riverside Restaurant-sponsored Wednesday Sweep on 35 points.

The section winners were as follows: 0-10 - Stevie Fox 29 points; 11-14 - Larry Ruddock 32 points; 15-18 - Eric McAfee 34 points; 19-plus - Francis McKee 35 points.

The Monday Seniors featured Tony Benson on top with 33 points.

The low section was won by John Ferguson with 30 points and Kenny Guy came home first across the high section thanks to 31.

John Clarke topped the veterans’ section on 30 points.

Anyone interested is signing up to the Club Matchplay competitions - Fairline Singles, Scracth Matchplay, John Jeffers Fourball, Club Foursomes or Mixed Matchplay - must register before the deadline of Sunday, May 3.

Forthcoming fixtures are as follows within the Portadown programme: Saturday, May 2 - May Pro’s Prize and PGA Tankard qualifier (18-hole stroke); Monday, May 4 - Bank Holiday Open Stableford (men and ladies).

Tomorrow (Saturday) marks the final day of payment to book a summer starting time.

Valerie Stewart won the ladies’ Calvin Bowl on 36 points - followed by Pat Jelly’s 35 and Denise Mowbray with 33.

Sandra Sandford was first in the nine-hole competition.

A timesheet has been posted for the Daisy Ferguson event on Tuesday, May 12.

The Junior Foursomes players entertain Malone tomorrow (Saturday), with the Minor Cup squad visiting Spa on May 11.

The Intermediate and Challenge teams lost out to, respectively, Carrickfergus and Belvoir.
