Sparring success

BOXING EACH week Mike ‘Enzo’ Jefferson will put the spotlight on the world of boxing in a special column.

“The sparring sessions recently proved popular in our Enzo’s Sports Gym.

“We had boxers from the host group and Craigavon Boxing Club, plus those in the worlds of kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts. The sessions were hotly-contested affairs, with the atmosphere like a small hall on a fight night.

“However, the main objective was to help fighters prepare for forthcoming bouts by mixing up the sparring sessions.

“With belts and championship titles up for grabs over the next few weeks then the level of intensity proved high.

“We had fighters weighing from 44kg to 87kg covering areas such as Craigavon, Lurgan and Banbridge, along with some born in Poland and Lithuania.

“We hope to have another sparring session a few weeks down the line on a Sunday afternoon. A fight night will take place on February 15 in Banbridge’s Belmont Hotel and we aim to carry profiles on the two Portadown fighters in next week’s column.

“On another note, I was recently asked about the Carl Frampton bout planned for February 9 in Belfast against Kiko Martinez.

“The noises from both camps have been, as expected, positive, with plenty of talk of victory. Kiko has plenty of skill and enjoyed success on previous visits to Northern Ireland. However, he has also struggled with injury issues so it will be interesting to see how everything develops.

“Carl has quite a bit of pressure on his shoulders but when you meet him it is obvious how success has not changed his outlook. He is extremely professional and even stages training sessions for boys in his local gym, such is his love for the sport.

“His approach gives him the best chance for a successful career.”
