Portadown’s James Carlton, Ryan Purvis and Chris Cousens helped Ulster to weekend glory in the IRFU Junior Inter-Provincial Championships.

The Ulster Junior Leagues select side recorded victory against Leinster in Dublin under the guidance of Bangor’s Jason Morgan.

Ulster defeated Connaught and Munster to set up Saturday’s city showdown, with Cousens clocking up crucial points.

Preparations included training sessions at Chambers Park and club members offer congratulations to the Portadown trio plus everyone connected to the Ulster panel.

Portadown Pumas’ Rugby League squad finished the Ashbourne Nines tournament with two wins from the four-game schedule.

The opening league date at Chambers Park has been set for May 23.

Mark Parker’s panel featured a mix of youth and experience, including a number of players gaining a first taste of the Rugby League code.

Training sessions will continue at Chambers Park each Thursday night, with everyone welcome to attend.

“The mix worked well and all seemed to enjoy the Rugby League experience,” said a club spokesman. “We won two and lost two, including defeat to a student select side that finished top overall.

“We would love to see more players down at training.”
