Eric McAfee held the upper hand on President’s Day from the first tee-off time to the final putt to capture the RW Millsopp Perpetual Trophy.

McAfee stepped out at 7 o’clock and finished his round on 41 points - then had to wait for the rest of the field to complete the Carrickblacker course before confirming victory.

Michael Connolly’s President’s Day celebration attracted almost 200 players, with McAfee opening his bid for glory with a birdie before another at the sixth within a front-nine score of 22 points.

He posted a solid return of 19 during the journey back to edge out Andrew Corkin across the nine-hole countback.

McAfee’s handicap has now been cut from 18 to 16.

Andrew Corkin, a former juvenile captain, was rewarded for his consistency with runner-up overall.

Nigel Gilliland came home ahead of Wilfred Reavie courtesy of the countback, with Don Black defeating Mark Jones by a similar method.

Craig Black sealed the gross prize on 71 and Bryan Friar was the leading guest following 37 points.

Sharon Horsfall lifted the ladies’ prize on 37 points and the leading team included Stephen Poole, Andrew Greenlee, Alan Simpson and David Dunlop.

Ashley Elliott collected the nearest-to-the-pin prize and Edward Rowe finished as leading juvenile.
