“TONY Hogg from East Antrim has been named the 2012 ‘Ulster Boat Champion’ thanks to a tough day of fishing on Lough Melvin.
Cool and bright conditions made for hard fishing in search of the renowned sonaghan trout as over 40 of the nation’s top anglers battled for an advantage.
In the end, the championship was won with just two fish – in fact, one proved enough to place some anglers in the Ulster team for September’s Inter-Provincial Championships.
Lurgan’s Keith Moffit qualified for Ulster - plus home knowledge helped Garrison-based Joe Gilroy and James Docherty also make the squad.
Anglers have reported fish to on Lough Derg to traditional wetflys in the wave and dry Wulfs in the calmer water.
Corrib and Mask both recently featured catches to wetfly and buzzer tactics.
Lough Sheelin, despite the cold north-easterly wind, is also seeing increased action, with good hatches of olives and duckfly.
Tomorrow (Saturday) will feature the top river anglers pushing for Ulster glory on the Annalee in County Cavan.
Neil McMullan, Stuart McMurran and Andrew Sloan all made the trip last Saturday for a practice session but had to fish a tributary due to the high water.
I fished the Cusher for a few hours last week with my son, Thomas and although the river still carried a tinge of colour we did manage to have quite a bit of sport, mainly to nymphs.
The Lagan system seemed to get more water than the rest of the rivers.
Thomas Russell landed over 20 trout last Thursday morning fishing above Dromore at ‘Blacks’.
Andrew Sloan, Mark Sloan and Warren Campbell fished the same stretch later that evening and all reported meeting plenty of trout.
Joe Heggarty from Lisburn fished the Iveagh Angling Club stretches at Milltown and Blackskull on Monday and returned near on 20 fish to 14 inches but also losing one much larger.
Spring salmon angling has picked up since the arrival of the rain.
The Munster Blackwater is currently in flood with reports of a good run of fresh fish entering the river over the weekend so prospects are good when it falls into shape.
Galway Weir has also seen good catches over the past week, with quality spring salmon being landed.
Closer to home and the River Mourne at Sion Mills has also seen fish recorded.
Glenkeen Fishery is still fishing well, with Armagh’s Joey McCabe landing the latest ‘Angler of the Week’ title after netting 14.
Keady’s Arthur Magennis still holds the lead at the top of the ‘Angler of Month’ competition, however, Brain Corrigan has cut this gap by an additional four.
The bait lake saw a lot of activity over the past week, with anglers returning home with up to a six-fish bag.
