ARMAGH anglers-backed fisheries have certainly provided plenty of value-for-money to club members and individuals in recent weeks.
Shaw’s Lake is low and continuing to fish well to the dry fly - successful patterns include cul de canard buzzers of varying colours, with black and brown down to as small as size 18 proving extremely effective.
The quality of both brown and rainbow trout being caught is outstanding, with Ashley McMullan and Richard McGammon claiming up to 4lb weight.
When anglers fish deeper using gold head hare’s ears, perch have been caught at considerable weight.
Over at Seagahan Dam, anglers have registered widespread success using a march brown wet fly, with some fine over-wintered rainbows included on that list - in particular, one at 5lb 10oz.
Tactics have varied, with top-of-the-water flies consistently scoring with F flies and sedge patterns while some anglers have ventured lower in the water column and employed epoxy buzzer tactics.
Lowry’s has been fishing very well early in the morning and great sport can be had if anglers are prepared to go down to sizes 18 and 20.
Boat anglers and those fishing from the bank have been on form - with a 9lb rainbow caught using a size 14 lime green heavy buzzer, plus 4lb rainbow and browns up 2lb all returned unharmed.
Eskragh Lough outside Dungannon is providing daytime sport with quality rainbows for those anglers prepared to vary tactics.
While dryfly can account for fish on some days, the recent high temperatures have seen anglers employ high density lines with blobs and humungi. Mark Sloan and Jason Russell landed fish recently to sunk-line tactics.
Glenkeen fly lake has fished well over the past two weeks, with dry flies in particular proving effective in bringing rewards to the bank.
Numerous anglers have landed well into double figures, with fish up to 8lb weight recorded.
A range of lures have also been used by anglers to help net fish.
Glenkeen Fishery recently hosted Omagh Angling Forum members for a charity competition - with Gary Wilson out in front thanks to a four-fish bag weighing in at over 10lb.
Mickey Collins claimed the heaviest fish at 5lb 8oz on his way to runner-up ahead of Mark Tierney.
The competition helped generate money in aid of Termonmaguirc Cancer Care.
The Bann below Lenaderg was recently on fire, with plenty of trout coming to the rod of Neil Cardwell’s wetfly tactics.
The Lagan at Dromore has also provided rewards, with nine-year-old William McMurran recently landing his first fish from the stretch at Black’s.
Andrew Sloan has positive reports about the town area in Dromore.
June traditionally heralds the start of the grilse run in earnest and catches have started to improve on the Foyle system.
Both the Mourne and Finn have seen good catches as the water has cleared, with a mixture of spring salmon and grilse.
Andy Dunne had a magnificent day at Cloghan Lodge on the Finn, landing 15 salmon to both spinners and flies.
The first few salmon have been recorded on the Faughan and a few fish seen on the Roe. Reports are that the Drowse also had a great weekend, with over 50 salmon the estimate.
