Coach calls for positive response to weekend loss
PORTADOWN ladies’ firsts opened the 2013 programme with a below-par performance against high-flying Pegasus.
“It was our first match back after the festive break but we really struggled to pick up the pace of the game, especially in the first half,” said Jane McKimm, the Portadown coach, following the 8-0 defeat to the defending champions. “We held out for 10 minutes or so but had a terrible 15-minute spell during which Pegasus carved us open.
“They scored four in quick succession then another two before the break.
“We regrouped at half-time and put on a much better show when it looked, at one point, like we might be heading for a double-figure defeat.
“We managed to hold out for 25 minutes in the second half before Pegasus increased the gap to seven and eight.
“We won three short corners and at least managed to test the Pegasus defence but lacked sharpness around the circle.
“The match showed the gulf between top and bottom in the Premier League and offered an insight into how much work we must do to compete at this level.
“We need to learn lessons quickly and make sure that there is something for us out of every game, regardless of the score.
“There is no place to hide at this level and Saturday was a harsh lesson for players.
“They will either sink or swim now.”
Portadown visit Queen’s tomorrow (Saturday) before a trip next week to Lurgan to start the final 10-game run.
