Confident display by ‘The Jackal’

BOXING MIKE Jefferson of Portadown-based Enzo Sports Gym will discuss each week the latest developments in the world of boxing:

“Carl ‘The Jackal’ Frampton met Kiko Martinez in Belfast’s Odyssey Arena on Saturday night in front of a superb home crowd.

“I know quite a few travelled from the area to support Frampton in his successful bid to capture the European Superbantamweight title.

“There was plenty of excitement following the heated weigh-in when the Spanish fighter took exception at comments from the Frampton camp.

“The whole bill featured some wonderful contests, with the crowd playing a key role in providing a superb atmosphere during a quality night of entertainment.

“Martinez was on the front foot from the start, pressing Frampton.

“The rounds proved difficult to score but Frampton connected with a sweet short right to put Martinez on the canvas for the first time in his career.

“The referee had to stop the fight, the crowd went wild and the atmosphere proved unbelievable, with the whole arena lifted.

“I have to say, the atmosphere was amazing and must rank alongside the great nights enjoyed by Frampton’s manager, Barry McGuigan, during his peak.

“On the local scene, Banbridge’s The Belmont Hotel will feature a 15-bout bill tonight (Friday).

“Kickboxers and fighters from the area will be on show and fans can pay at the door.

“Another event has been scheduled for March in Carrickfergus.”
