MECHANICS’ INSTITUTE DOUBLES (FINAL)

PORTADOWN’S Royal British Legion table played host to the latest Mechanics’ Institute Doubles final - with players from Division Two-based Masonic A and Green Baize C on show.

Hutchinson’s 24 break pushed Green Baize clear by 14 points in the first frame, leading to a frantic period of play dominated by fortune good and bad.

Gillow’s pot on the blue was followed by a superb snooker, with Hutchinson then creating two traps before closing protracted play on the pink with a slick double.

Hutchinson posted early points over frame two ahead of safety play and a string of breaks. Cunningham recorded 17 and 16 breaks before Hutchinson’s 13 left the Masonic men in control by 57-33.

Pots on the yellow and green by Cunningham helped to increase the gap to 18 before Walsh secured a frame-winning pink.

Safety play proved the theme in the third frame before the pack opened along with the flow of the final.

Moderate breaks put Green Baize up by 22 points entering the final red. Snookers and success at the table followed before Masonic eventually opted to concede on a 72-31 deficit.

The vital fourth frame opened with both sets of players in battling mood and enjoying spells on top.

In the end, Hutchinson settled the frame and final across the colours.

The silverware was presented by the County Armagh Snooker League chairman, David Emerson.
