Focus turns to Banbridge fight night

BOXING MIKE ‘Enzo’ Jefferson writes exclusively each week in The Portadown Times about the fight scene:

“On Friday, February 15 the 2013 kickboxing calendar will kick off with a ‘Banbridge Bash’ in The Belmont Hotel.

“Fighters from Portadown, Craigavon and Lurgan will enter the ring for the event promoted by Fight Club NI.

“The bill also includes competitors on show from clubs across Belfast, Dungannon, Armagh, Londonderry, Antrim, Cookstown, Maherafelt, Bangor, Glengormley and Larne.

“Visiting fighters are expected from Letterkenny and Sligo for a contest created by Lurgan’s David Boyd.

“David is a former top-ranked European title contender with plenty of experience at promoting shows.

“The bill features no fewer than 15 bouts and brings back memories of previous events in Banbridge’s The Coach for people like David, Tony Blevins, Ali Brown and Alan Campbell.

“The ‘Banbridge Bash’ can be considered one of the biggest kickboxing bills ever in Northern Ireland, with every fight rated as ‘adult full-contact’.

“Derryadd’s Gerald Doran, the current Northern Ireland light-heavyweight champion, will be competing in an All-Ireland Challenge for the 79-kilo belt.

“Lurgan’s Alan Campbell has been running a Portadown club for the past three or four years but will be pushing for the Northern Ireland light-middleweight prize almost two decades after his previous title bid.”

Tickets cost £10 - with the fee payable at the door – and the programme will run from 7.30.

“Those in attendance may want to keep an eye on one of the most important officials, the timekeeper.

“The timekeeper’s main duty is to regulate the number and duration of rounds, plus the interval period in boxing, kickboxing and MMA.

“He must be seated ringside and clear the ring five seconds before the start of any round.

“He will start and end each round by striking a bell and announce the number in advance.

“People may think the count is staged by a referee in the event of a knockdown but, in reality, the timekeeper moves his hand and the man in the middle follows the official.

“Finally, a member of my gym at Enzo’s Sports asked me can referees wear glasses.

“The answer is only contact lenses during a bout with the exception of non-international tournaments.”
