PORTADOWN Outdoor Bowling Club’s opening event was held on Saturday at the Pleasure Gardens.

Over 30 players took part in friendly competition – with David Lyttle, the club president, offering a warm welcome to everyone who helped to support the occasion.

Ethel Lyttle, the wife of the president, delivered the first bowl of the outdoor season and a meal was provided for over 60 club representatives and guests thanks to the ladies’ committee.

Faith McKinney, the ladies’ president, also delivered kind words on the day.

Portadown’s ranks have been boosted this season by three returning players and six fresh additions to the roster.

Friendly dates have been scheduled against Lurgan, with full practice on Wednesday for all players and the B team home to Markethill next Thursday.

The opening league fixtures will be held on Saturday, April 28.

OFFICERS have been selected as follows for the Armagh Zone committee:

CHAIRMAN – Gus Crothers; VICE-CHAIRMAN – Hugh Trainor; SECRETARY/CONVENOR – Flo McNally; TREASURER – Cyril Leckey; JUNIOR COACH – Paul Whittle.

COMMITTEE: Pauline Beattie; Sandra Whittle; Colin Deering; Robert Hunter; Andrew Hughes; Jal Richardson; Derek Wright.

THE revival of the Alwood Shield Invitation competition has attracted a purse of £1,200 thanks to sponsorship from Alfred Briggs (Alwood) Ltd.

The bespoke furniture manufacturers have backed the outdoor event - which was donated originally in 1968 by the founder of the company, the late Alfred Briggs.

A steering committee comprising Alan Roberts and George Richardson was put together by the Briggs family to establish the invitation inter-club charity challenge competition.

Invitations will be delivered to clubs in the area and entry forms – plus the £15 registration fee – should be sent to Alan Roberts, competition secretary, by May 15. Rinks fees have been set at £10 per night.

The selected charity is The Meningitis Trust.

Ten clubs will compete over a two-league format from August 6-17, with the grand final at Lurgan green.

AUGHITOBER Bowling Club will stage a fun pairs tournament over May 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 7 o’clock each night.
