Froch on form

“I WAS recently asked by Connor Lyness my view on the rematch debate between Carl Froch and Lucian Bute.

“Connor had read some Froch interviews in which he talked about hoping to take on either Andrew Ward or Mikkel Kessler.

“However, the references to a Bute rematch proved confusing.

“For me, Froch’s defeat of Bute showed how much better the new champion is compared to the old champ and that any rematch clause should be made void immediately by the Froch camp.

“A rematch clause, traditionally agreed in advance of the original fight, is understood to place the next bout in Bute’s Canada homeland.

“It would provide Bute with more familiar and comfortable surroundings, plus a nice payday.

“However, in my view, the Froch fight with Bute was never really close.

“Bute may have registered one solid round but even that is debatable.

“His only real glimmer of hope arrived in round four but Froch ultimately pounded him and domination proved the clear theme of the fight.

“Froch controlled each and every round of the quick fight, eventually putting Bute out of his misery on the way to the IBF super-middleweight belt.

“Therefore, I do not think Bute deserves a rematch and any follow-up would only be of value to those in line to make money from the bout.

“The only fight most fans want to see is a showdown between Froch and the current number one super-middleweight, Ward.

“However, it seems inevitable - given how boxing operates - that Froch must instead face Bute in a rematch.”
