PORTADOWN men’s firsts picked up a point on Saturday against the league leaders and recently-crowned Linden Cup champions, Raphoe.

A tense opening spell offered limited sights of goal before Stuart Kirkland picked out the run of Neil Gilmore on 12 minutes. Gilmore was pushed wide but he steered in a superb reverse-stick shot from a tight angle to break the deadlock.

Raphoe responded by placing Portadown on the backfoot during the entertaining tussle.

The equaliser was scored on 25 minutes despite claims by Portadown of an infringement.

Raphoe pushed hard to gain control from this slice of luck but the break arrived with both squads on level terms.

Steven Johnston whipped in a cross after the interval which Jamie Wright narrowly avoided turning home, with Portadown working hard to protect the stalemate.

PORTADOWN men’s thirds dominated possession last weekend but failed to gain any reward at home to Raphoe.

The Brownlow clash placed Portadown in control for around an hour before Raphoe hit back late on.

Paul Bennett was instrumental in Portadown’s positive play and a slick finish by Johnny Harper from Matthew Lappin’s pass put the hosts in front.

A string of short-corner opportunities helped Portadown to increase the pressure, with Luke Chambers and Niall Magee both close to increasing the gap.

Jordan Brown forced the Raphoe goalkeeper into a smart stop before the away side claimed an equaliser against the run of play.

Raphoe then added number two courtesy of a long ball upfield and deflection.

Chambers appeared on course to convert an equaliser but his shot bounced off the post - however, Harper proved sharp to slot away the rebound.

A third goal was scored, however, by Raphoe before the close of play to push Portadown down in the league standings.
