MARTIAL ARTS PORTADOWN-BASED Kangaroo Kids Martial Art Club officials have confirmed a programme open to children of varying experience and ability levels.

Operating out of Enzo’s Sports, classes for 5-12 year olds will be held each Monday afternoon (4 o’clock start) and Saturday morning (9 o’clock start).

“We offer children exercise classes that fuse traditional Korean martial arts with an Australian’s ‘ave-a-go’ attitude,” said Australia-born Felicity Haire. “Our coaching methods build your child’s abilities in sports fundamentals and also everyday skills.

“We believe this gives your child the best chance of improving their physical capabilities while building their confidence.

“This is achieved through both the syllabus and the grading exams.

“The exercises in the syllabus develop your child’s co-ordination, agility, strength and flexibility, which are all combined together to enable them to complete the more difficult dynamic movements like combining jumps with tumbles.

“The Hapkido self-defence techniques rely on the kids gaining a sense of balance, probably one of the more useful skills we teach.

“It is used as a self-defence fundamental and also a physical building block for effective and efficient movement in other sports.

“The grading exams are important because the kids need to demonstrate their ability to set and complete goals, listen in class, participate in team and individual challenges and also show leadership skills by taking the class for exercise drills.

“Another benefit of the grading system is that we encourage the kids to get active outside our class by providing illustrated exercise sheets they use to revise for the gradings.

“This year we would like to get you exercising as a family unit and are encouraging parents to spend a couple of minutes at the end of class with us exercising on the mats.

“For homework, we hope the parents can see the lighter side of having their child show them techniques.

“Our intentions are not for you to correct your child’s technique, that’s our job, it is for you to enjoy yourselves together.”
